What is a disposable mask?

Masks act as a filtering barrier to protect our respiratory system and are effective in preventing infectious diseases. It is necessary to choose the mask reasonably and wear it correctly.

At present, the mask on the market is mainly divided into three categories, one is the filtration efficiency of the lower cotton mask; one is a slightly higher filtration efficiency, non-woven disposable medical masks; one is the filtration efficiency of the higher protective masks.

cotton mask

A mechanical filter mask that acts as a filter through layers of cotton. Cotton masks have the lowest filtration efficiency and can only have some blocking effect on coarse particles like hair strands, but they provide the best warmth and comfort.

disposable mask

It is mainly made of non-woven fabric and has a slightly higher filtering effect than cotton masks.

Medical masks without the word "protection" on the name of the "surgical" are the ordinary level of single-use medical masks, the level of masks do not require a barrier effect on the blood, and there is no requirement for adhesion, for very small particles, disposable masks are not as effective as protective masks. It is therefore intended for use in general medical settings only. But it can be used for larger particulate matter, such as dust, pollen, and flyways.
Medical-surgical masks

Medical-surgical masks are used for droplet isolation protection and are required in infectious disease departments and fever clinics. It is divided into three layers, the outer layer has a water-blocking effect, can prevent droplets from entering the mask to its interior; the middle layer has a filtering effect, can block more than 5μm particles in the air, filtering effect ≥ 90%; the inner layer near the mouth and nose to absorb moisture. However, medical-surgical masks have limited filtering efficiency for particles and are mostly rectangular in design, which is not as close to the face as medical protective masks.

protective mask

Medical protective masks that we often say the KN95 mask, medical protective masks for non-oily 0.3μm particles filtration efficiency is greater than 95%, medical protective masks, and the wearer's face has a good fit, can filter particles in the air, block droplets, blood, body fluids, secretions, and other pollutants, the filtration efficiency of non-oily particles can reach more than 95%, is to deal with airborne diseases commonly used personal protective equipment.

The higher the protection, the worse the breathability and moisture absorption of the mask, which means that it is less comfortable to wear and cannot be worn for too long.

For the general public in non-high-risk occupations, N95 masks are not necessary to prevent novel coronavirus pneumonia, and medical-surgical masks can also block most of the droplet-adhesive virus from entering the respiratory tract.

The wrong way to wear a mouthpiece can be a big deal.

1. Hand washing should be done before wearing a mask.

2. When wearing the disposable medical mask, the face should be fully unfolded, the mouth, nose, and jaw should be completely covered, and then the nose clip should be pressed to make the mask and the face fit perfectly. Also, note that disposable masks have an inner and outer function, the light-colored side has a moisture-absorbing function and should be attached to the mouth and nose, while the dark-colored side faces outward. To check if the mask is tightly closed to your face, it's simple to take a deep breath and then a few quick puffs to find out if your nose and mouth are leaking air.

3. After wearing the mask, try not to touch the mask. If you must touch, remember to wash your hands both before and after touching.

4. When removing the mask, try not to touch the outside of the mask, and remember to wash your hands immediately after removing the mask.

Notes.

Wearing a mask should pay attention to the principle of exclusive use, which may lead to cross-infection and other consequences if used interchangeably.

The principle of non-repetitive use, disposable masks need to be replaced daily and not reused.

For reusable cotton masks, care should be taken to clean them in time and put them in the sun for disinfection. Used cotton masks will adsorb bacteria, dust, randomly put in the pocket, and will come into contact with different sources of pollution, such as not cleaned and worn again, most likely to cause respiratory tract infections.

Children over the age of 3 can choose to wear gauze or cotton masks, because these masks have a better ability to filter dust, but also more comfortable and breathable, more suitable for children to wear. In addition, be careful to take off the mask more often, to breathe fresh air, patients with respiratory diseases, especially asthma patients, the elderly, children, prolonged wearing of the mask may cause breathing deprivation.
